It was just a while back that you wanted to learn about all
sorts of different stuff to create a website, to enter the virtual plane. And
now look at yourself, you got yourself a website! You not just exist in the
real world, but the virtual one too now. What if we told you, we can help you
become a well-known celebrity here? Someone well known? That you could make it
to the top pages of the search results on Google? Out of all the several
thousands, no millions of results when someone searches something related to
you, you would be on the top. Sounds fascinating, doesn’t it?
Now that we have your attention, it’s time to revisit one of
the concepts we mentioned in the first tutorial, Search Engine Optimization, or
SEO for short.
To refresh your memory, let me define SEO again:
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is a process
of affecting the visibility of a webpage or a website in search engines like
Google’s unpaid search results. The better search engine optimized your page or
website is, the more on top it will be.
Now that we’ve seen what SEO is, let’s get to the part where
we do it. Just follow these steps:
1)
Go to https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url
and submit your website address to Google. It will help place your site in
Google’s server so that the next time someone searches something related to
you, Google remembers that it also has to display your site.
2)
Now that Google knows we exist, we have to tell
it who we are and when to show us. Obviously you can’t come up on a search
result for pizza if your musician. For this, login to your site.
3)
Go to plugins -> Add new. In the search bar,
type Yoast SEO.
4)
Click Install now on “Wordpress SEO by Yoast”.
The plugin will be installed automatically.
5)
After its installed, click on “Activate plugin”
6)
Now go to your posts and if you haven’t added
any yet, there should be a sample post called “Hello World”.
7)
Scroll down the page and now you can see the SEO
settings for this post.
·
Snippet Preview: is how your post will appear in
the search engine results.
·
Focus Keyword: is/are the main keywords in your
post that will become the focal point of the search results. For example, the
post contains the word “Hello World”. If your focus keyword is “World”, and
someone searches for world, the search engine will pull out your
website/webpage from its archive and display in the results. Your focus keyword
should be something closely related to your post or page so that the results
are accurate.
·
SEO Title: The title of your page/post that will
appear in the search result.
·
Meta Description: This will be a really brief
summary of your post or page, in less than 156 characters. That way users would
know what this post/page is about when they search and will come to you if they
find your Meta description convincing.
8)
Now that your page or post is optimized, its
time for one final step. Go to Settings -> Permalink. Permalinks are the
links of your site’s pages and posts. Change it to “Post Name” from “Default”
and that is it.
9)
Remember or write down on your arm if your
memory span is like a goldfish, you would have to do this for every page, every
post. Except for the permalink setting, which is permanent, Each new post or
page will require to be optimized.
This is a very basic tutorial on different SEO techniques. For a more detailed tutorial on SEO-ing your site, stay tuned for more. There's a lot more where this came from...
