Exist 3: Setting up a WordPress site

So you’ve managed to get yourself on the web, but that’s not all. You don’t build a big beautiful house next to the beach and leave it all empty do you? No, you decorate it, you paint it, and maybe you build a nice place for barbeque or plant stuff. Just like that, you don’t stop at just getting a domain and hosting, you decorate it, move your stuff in.

Just like your house, you need a decorator some big guys to help you move in stuff, to make it to your liking. But how great it would it be, if you could just move a finger and everything just magically appears in its place? Lucky for you, it’s possible in your new online home. We’re going to teach you the secret magic, a forbidden magic to set up your place on the World Wide Web in a little while. For this we’ll be using the magical tool or package called “Wordpress”. It takes two minutes to install and really easy to use.

To start, we’ll give a basic introduction of what Wordpress is and what you can do with it. To quote the great scholar, Wikipedia:
“Wordpress is a free and open-source blogging tool and a content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. Features include a plugin architecture and a template system. Wordpress was used by more than 23.3% of the top 10 million websites as of January 2015. Wordpress is the most popular blogging system in use on the Web, at more than 60 million websites.”

Now to explain, Wordpress is a free blogging tool, with hundreds of thousands plugins and themes available. Some of them are available for free but some are commercial, developed by third parties, so you might have to buy them. You may be thinking, I don’t want a blog, I want something for my store, or I want something for my business. Well don’t underestimate the power of Wordpress. It’s far more than just a blogging tool. With the aforementioned themes, you can virtually create any kind of website you wish for, with just a few clicks. And it has a very friendly community that can help you with whatever issues you have.
So now let’s actually begin. You know about what you’re going to use, it’s time to use it.
For most hosting servers, you can find the option to install Wordpress automatically. What if there isn’t? Well it’s not hard to do it manually. Just follow these steps and you’ll be done long before you know it:
1)      Go to www.wordpress.org and click on the download button at the upper right corner. From there you’ll be redirected to the downloads page. Look for where it says “Download Wordpress 4.6” (At the time of writing, the latest version is 4.6). Download Wordpress from there.
2)      Here’s a bit tricky part. You should have a zip file downloaded somewhere on your computer. Mostly it’s the downloaded folder unless you chose to save it someplace else. Locate it. Remember it.
3)      Open up your account on the hosting site you chose. We chose hostinger so we’ll be going with it. Scroll down to the “Databases” section. Open “MySQL Databases”.
4)      On the page that opens up, give your database and name, a username and a password. Remember all the details, or write them down if you have a lot on your mind. Also, write down the Database host. It should be right beside the details of the new table you created.
5)      Go back to the previous page and look for the “Files” section and look for “File manager 2” and open it. Now we’re going to upload the file you downloaded earlier.
6)      You should be in your FTP account now. Open the folder names “public_html”. Don’t touch anything else.
7)      Now click on the upload button. Remember to click on the button that says upload, not the other one. You should be now on a page to upload your content.
8)      As you can see, there are two columns on the page. One says files, other says archives. If you want to upload just a single file, like an image or a document, you click on the browse button below Files. Otherwise, if it’s something in zip format, click on browse under Archives. Since our Wordpress file is zip, we click on the archives format. Browse to where you saved the downloaded the file and upload it. It may take some time depending on your internet connection. Don’t panic.
9)      Now go to your website. Time to install Wordpress. Now you will need to use all those details I told you remember and write down. Just enter them and click next. You don’t need to touch the last detail though, the table prefix. Leave it as is.

10)   And there you go, your website is installed. Try revisiting it and see.

11)   To login to the admin panel, write down your website address, and add “/wp-admin”.

And there you go! You have created your own website! How cool is that. Now we have to modify it and make it according to what we want. That we’ll tell you how in the next tutorial. While you’re waiting for it, go ahead and play around with the features of your admin panel.
Ciao!
